Bad Dad

One of the last nights of our vacation we went to dinner at Margie and Ray's Crab House, which is just as charming as is sounds. Dr. SOB doesn't really like shellfish because he says it reminds him of big roaches. Usually he'll order a steak, but Margie and Ray's isn't the kind of place that serves steak, so he ended up with some ribs instead. It was getting close to Sammy's bedtime, and he was teetering on the edge of wailing just as they set our entrees down. Between Dr.'s ribs and my seafood feast, neither one of us was going to be able to do the whole 'eat and hold the baby at the same time' trick. At first we tried to give him a few toys to keep him entertained, but he wasn't having it. Dr. made eyes at me across the table with a commanding look on his face and informed me that he had an idea. He told me I wouldn't like it, but to trust him. There have been a few occasions in Sam's short life that Dr. SOB has come up with some creative solutions, so I told him to have at it. Then he handed my baby a french fry.

A. French. Fry. As in fried food. And I'm sure it was processed. Look at the grease on my baby's fingers!

And he shut the hell up.

As soon as he had mashed the fry between his little gums, he started screaming for another. The remainder of the meal was spent handing the little fella fried potatoes under the threat of terrible terrible screams.

We left after finishing our meal at a leisurely pace. Now that we're back home, I've tried substituting the french fries with zwieback toasts. Seems to be doing the trick!

Is that a Winnie the Pooh Christmas bib he's wearing in that picture?

Is it that time of year ALREADY??

I knew someone would catch that!

It's one of the larger bibs we have and it's plastic backed, so nothing soaks through. My baby shower was the week before Christmas, so we have plenty of holiday goods. It's Christmas all year round here!

I don't know why kids love french fries so much. I am pro-fry myself, though not the icky greasy ones. I guess I'm pro-oven-baked-potato-wedge. Those always shut me up.

oh that was me.

Careful! Soon you'll catch yourself popping open a can of Chef Boyardee and baking up some tater-tots. Now ask me what the boy ate for lunch today... :)

So far, I've avoided most of the "bad" stuff, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we're stuffing his face with fritos and swiss rolls.

French Fries are your friend. Honor the french fry. Love the french fry. It's God's mostly organic pacifier and has worked to keep our little Jake occupied on a few occasions. A finger full of mashed potatoes works wonders, too.

Lora said...I let Jake eat water ice yesterday. He tried banana and lemon, and he loved it. And he didn't die of sugar shock, but I hope he knows he won't be getting more for a very long time!

I bet water ice would go over well here, too! I saw another baby eat an icee (I'm not naming names Greg!) and he went nuts over it!
