Have You Heard the News?

If your name is Sam, then probably not.

That's because my little man is a little hard of hearing. It's very likely that his hearing loss is because of fluid in his ears, which can be resolved one of two ways.

The easy way, which is the protocol we're currently following, is antibiotics for 10 days. I'm wishing and hoping that this takes care of the problem and we can go forward with just the speech therapy. However, I'm doubtful. I can remember several occasions in Atlanta when our pediatrician mentioned that Sam had fluid in his ears. Since it was never infected nothing was ever done about it. But if he's been walking around hearing everything as though he was underwater, I can understand why he doesn't talk much. Even when he does, his pronunciation is kind of wonky. For example, when he says 'thank you' it sounds like 'dhank ewww.'

Which kind of makes sense.

So if the 10 days of amoxicillin doesn't do the trick, we go to see an ENT, who will probably suggest ear tubes. While the tubes themselves are not a big deal, getting them requires general anesthesia, and this freaks SOB out in a major way. And when he freaks out, I freak out.

So to summarize, we are a bunch of freaking freaks, and most of us can't hear.

Oh, I didn't mention that I failed Sam's hearing test, too? I get my very own later on this month to make it official, but survey says I'm going deaf.

Oh well, at least I got some new toys for my birthday to keep me occupied.

Who needs to hear when you've got toys like that?!!! We'll cross our fingers & toes that the antibiotics are magical and that you don't have to worry anymore... a year from now I'd be willing to bet that you'll be BEGGING for a solitary moment of silence from Sam-o!!

So sorry that this is hanging over your heads. The wait and see is always so hard, especially with options like that to consider. I'm no expert, but a friend's child had to have tubes put in for a similar issue and they worked. He is a very frisky, well-spoken little 4 year old.

But I'll still say a prayer that the drugs work first!

Oh bugger it. Get the tubes. If he is delayed in speech this has been an on-going persistent problem and I don't reckon drugs will crack it. Tubes definitely will though and it is such a routine job nowadays (SOB should know that)...
As for you...did they give you any reasons for the hearing loss? I constantly feel like I am underwater nowadays and the Doc says it is sinus related. Had I been 4 I would have tubes too but as an adult apparently they don't work so well. She gave me a nasal spray to reduce my sinuses so the ears would drain...but it didn't work. I still can't bear having my face under water in the pool as the pressure on my sinuses is v uncomfortable. guess I should go back to the Doc eh? Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for all your support. I've been trying not to think much about it because I just get myself into A State. There is nothing I can do about anything right now anyway, so we're just holding down the fort until we go back to the doc's next tuesday!

Sorry to hear that...hopefully the antibiotics work to clear the fluid. That being said, I've had several friends whose little ones have had to get tubes and they all went well. I think the worst part for them was the stress on the mommy. ((hugs))
