Natural Child Birth: Fanning the Flames

I've never before participated in the book clubs offered by the SV Moms group, but when they announced August's book would be Birth Day by Mark Sloan I decided to throw my hat into the ring. This purpose isn't to review the book per se, but instead to write about your thoughts on the book, kind of like how you'd discuss the book in an actual book club.

I mentioned last week how the book Birth Day was the jumping off point for my decision to try for a natural child birth this third time around. When I first found out I was pregnant in January, I assumed that my labor would end up being about the same as my first two. That is, highly managed with lots of interventions. By the time I finished the first chapter, I was already thinking, 'Why not let my body do what it's been trained to do for thousands of years?'

As a biologist by education, I am constantly amazed by what the human body is capable of. On a cellular level, thinking about how microscopic ions inside of cell organelles are keeping us alive blows my mind. On a bigger scale, watching my kids grow over the past three and a half years has given me a new appreciation for the strength and power our bodies possess. It's also given me confidence that my own body can handle the process of birthing this baby largely on it's own.

Married to an anesthesiologist, many people have questioned whether he'll be able to separate his life and job when I'm in labor. He thumbed through the book as well, especially the chapter on the epidural monoculture. There were some ruffled feathers, I'll admit, but he's a rational person. We had several lengthy discussions about his opinions on other forms of pain relief and what non-epidural pain management methods he would support. Because he's been so agreeable, I've followed up with other books on natural child birth. With his help, I'm optimistic that an intervention-free child birth is something we can accomplish.

I just wish that the other doctors I've been dealing with during this pregnancy were as supportive. So far, I've only gotten positive responses from one of three obstetricians in the practice where I'm a patient. The other two have been negative and downright condescending. In fact, just this morning one of the obstetricians asked, 'What does your anesthesiologist husband think about that?' when I spoke with him about my intentions. I'm half tempted to take a few copies of this book along with me to the office the next time I go and hand them out to the less-than-supportive members of the staff.

Either that or have this baby at home!

Crib Jumpers

I was sitting at the dining room table peeling tomatillos, when all of a sudden I heard a sickening thud. It sounded like a piece of furniture fell through the floor from the attic onto the second floor. But one second later I heard the most piercing scream I've ever heard in my life. I was on the phone with my mother, who I'm sure nearly had a heart attack when I panicked and screamed for my husband, who is still at work.

I got up the stairs faster than I have in eight months.

By the time I got there, Sam had already come out of his room to see what was going on. Lulu was in a heap on the floor. There was no blood, and all of her limbs were moving, so I immediately grabbed her up. After a thorough examination, some googling, and about seventeen minutes of screaming and consoling, I concluded that a trip to the doctor wasn't necessary.

However, a trip to Ikea for a new toddler bed is on the agenda for this weekend.

Shout Out to Wichita!

So I wrote this post last week for the Philly Moms Blog. And then it got a mention over at Strollerderby. And then it got picked up by the MCT syndicate feed. And today it ran in the Wichita Eagle. I kind of feel a little famous, even though it inspired some negative comments over at Strollerderby.

Anyway, if you're a reader and you live in Wichita, run out and pick up a copy of the Eagle! If you get an extra and send it to me, I'll autograph it for you!

Another One Bites the Dust: Dead Fish 2.0

If you ever read my posts over at the Philly Moms Blog, then you already know that Sam's birthday fish died when we were away at the end of March. Quick recap: I bought a weekend feeder that didn't work and when we got home the fish was dead. We quickly concealed this fact and I picked up a replacement fish for all of $0.19 the next day and he was none the wiser.

Well, Sunday night we discovered that Nemo 2.0 had also gone to the great fishbowl in the sky. First of all, I was PISSED! I spend several hours minutes once or twice a week cleaning the damn fishbowl, which was a total pain in the ass. I fed the little bugger right on time, and if he didn't eat everything I offered him I would fish out the excess so that his aquatic home would stay fresher longer. I did everything in my control to ensure he would have a long and happy life.

But this tweaker of a fish decided that all of my hard work wasn't worth it and he kicked the bucket. Last time this happened, we debated on how we would manage the situation in regards to Sam the next time. Now that it was, in fact, the next time we were still quite at a loss as to what to tell the kid. We fretted and debated, and then I did what I should have done right off of the bat.

I called my mom.

Naturally, she was able to come up with a stellar solution in mere seconds. For those of you unfamiliar with the plot of Finding Nemo, a young clown fish gets caught by a diver and put in a tank in a dentist's office in Sydney. He desperately wants to get back to his father in the ocean. A jaded old fish in the tank tells him that the only way to escape is to get out down a drain, because all drains lead to the ocean.

(Never mind that these are salt water fish and the drains in question are all fresh water drains, unless somehow Aussies have the magic ability to consume salt water without, um, dying. Care to weigh in on that Arizaphale?)

ANYWAY.

Conveniently, we had decided to keep the fish bowl on the kitchen counter, within reasonable distance of the sink. So my mother, of course, told me that when Sam discovers his fish is gone (because we totally flushed that mother effer first thing) we can just tell him that he jumped down the drain like Nemo so that he could go and find his daddy. Brilliant!

I hope I'm that smart when turn into a grandma.

An Angry Snowman Christmas

When I was a child both of my grandmothers had ceramic Christmas trees with little clear plastic decorations that would glow when a light bulb within the tree was turned on. My paternal grandmother's was all white with little blue birds all over it and my maternal grandmother's was traditional green with colorful bulbs all over. For as long as I can remember these captivated my attention entirely. Maybe since I was just a little child I enjoyed the small scale of the tree, or maybe it was the mystery of those lighted decorations. I remember pulling them out and being mystified because they no longer were glowing. Then I would put them back in place and light up myself when the light would return.

Last Christmas our neighbors brought this for us:

It's very similar to my Grammy's particular tree, only with the addition of a somewhat angry snowman. Although one of my friends pointed out that he might just be Asian, and not angry. You be the judge.

It doesn't really matter if he's mad or just culturally insensitive because my kids adore him. As soon as I plug it in they come running and just stare and marvel at the little lights, even though its merely four feet from our seven-plus foot tall Christmas tree. It makes me smile. I hope that as we all grow older we can remember and re-capture little moments like these not just at Christmas but all year round.
